Contrave is a newly-approved extended-release medication that contains 2 main ingredients: Naltrexone and Bupropion. This drug is used in order to help people with excessive weight. As obesity can lead to a number of health problems, it is very important that the people who are fighting this condition can not only lose some of their weight, but can also maintain this result for a certain period of time. Contrave is a drug that is meant to help people with such needs.
Contrave weight lost pill is approved by the FDA, but caution and responsibility is required from all the people who are taking it.
In order to avoid drug abuse and, consequently, severe health problems, Contrave is available only with a prescription.
The patients taking Contrave achieve better results in weight loss if they combine the pills with a low calorie diet and physical exercise.
It should be stressed that although a number of tests and studies have been carried out in order to reveal all the side effects that are caused by the medication, it is not yet known if Contrave can increase the risks of heart-related problems.
Contrave should be administered only to people above the age of 18 as its effectiveness and safety for the people below this age hasn’t been studied.

As Bupropion is an anti-depressant drug, it has been known to cause certain changes in the patients’ behaviour and arouse suicidal thoughts. If the person taking Contrave has or recently had depression and mood swings, the medication can aggravate this state and arouse negative thoughts especially during the first period of treatment.
The patient must stop taking Contrave and immediately call their doctor in case they or their family members notice that one or more of these symptomes appeared or aggravated.
- Thoughts about death/suicide
- Suicidal attempts
- Depression (newly-appeared or aggravated)
- Mood swings
- Agitation, restlessness
- Aggressiveness, violence
- Any other kind of behavior that was uncharacteristic to the person before they started taking the medication
Family members should be aware of the fact that the person is undergoing a treatment with Contrave because they should be alert and should note any changes in the person’s state.
The patient should regularly visit their physician and inform the doctor about any changes in their physical or moral condition.
Also Contrave should not be administered or administered under permanent supervision to people who:
- Have high blood pressure (because Contrave is known to increase it)
- Experience seizures (or experienced in the past)
- Have or had anorexia or bulimia
- Have an opioid addiction or are currently undergoing a treatment to get rid of it
- Have an alcohol addiction or have suddenly stopped drinking alcohol after they had been drinking for a long time
- Have or had allergic reactions to any of Contrave ingredients
- Are currently taking other medications
Pregnant women or the ones who are currently breastfeeding must not take Contrave.
Women who are planning to get pregnant in the nearest time should also avoid taking this medication.
Before taking Contrave weight lost drug one should consult a specialist and inform them about any of the following medical conditions, or any other health problems that could be relevant:
- Any kind of mental illness that the patient has or had in the past
- High level of blood sugar
- Any kind of infection or tumor that affects central nervous system
- Heart-related problems
- Diabetes (the doctor should be informed about the type of diabetes the person has and if they are currently taking Insulin)
- Alcohol or drug addiction
Breastfeeding is not to be combined with Contrave treatment as the medication that will penetrate the baby’s organism through milk can harm the baby’s health.
Unless prescribed otherwise, Contrave is usually taken in the following way:
1st week: 1 tablet in the morning only
2nd week: 1 tablet in the morning and 1 tablet in the evening
3rd week: 2 tablets in the morning and 1 tablet in the evening
4th week: 2 tablets in the morning and 2 tablets in the evening (this dosage is taken from the fourth week onwards unless the doctor prescribes otherwise).
Contrave should be taken according to the prescription and the dosage should not be reduced or increased without consulting the specialist.
If at the close of 16 weeks the patient hasn’t lost at least some amount of their weight, they should stop taking Contrave.
Conrave diet pills are to be swallowed whole, they are not to be cut or chewed.
The patients are not to exceed the maximum dosage of the medication: 2 pills at a time and 4 pills a day.
In case of a missed dose, the patient should wait until the time comes to take the next dose of pills; on no account should a double dose be taken.
In case of an overdose the patient should instantly address their doctor or any other medical assistant to get help.
While undergoing a treatment with Contrave the patient should not drink alcohol in excess.
During the trials a number of side effects brought about by Contrave have been observed. Some of them are:
- Nausea (one of the most common side effects)
- Seizures (the risk of having a seizure increases if the patient is taking Contrave)
If the patient experiences a seizure while taking Contrave, they should stop taking the pills and contact their doctor immediately.
- Raise in blood pressure or heart rate
- Changes in behaviour or moral state
In order to use Contave safely and effectively the person using it should do it very responsibly. Contrave is not to be used for the treatment of any other kind of medical condition than overweight or obesity. It should not be advised or given to other people who weren’t prescribed the medication because an irrational use of this drug may severely harm their health.
Contrave should be stored at room temperature in a dry place.
